SMArt Talks: Building Histories
We cordially invite you to the autumn lecture series SMArt Talks, organised by the Centre for Modern Art & Theory. SMArt Talks: Building Histories start on the 23rd of September!
Dear and dear friends,
As the end of the semester approaches, the last fall lecture of the JinaX Central Center is knocking on the door. Before the Christmas holidays, we will say goodbye together with an evening dedicated to Lenka Vrlíková's lecture entitled Obrazy v mlhavém oparu: Kolonialisums, mýty a středověké umění v Etiopii.
We will meet again on Thursday, December 14 at 7 p.m. in the Hans Belting Library. The live broadcast will also be streamed online on the Center for Early Medieval Studies channel, where the lecture can be caught up with in retrospect
The lecture will be held in Czech only.
All are cordially invited.
Annotation:
Ethiopia can be characterized by its extraordinary
cultural and religious diversity - for nearly two millennia it has bridged the cultures of Africa with Arabia and South Asia. Yet Ethiopian art is largely perceived as archaic and culturally isolated, based purely on the unchanging continuity of the late antique Christian visual tradition, and the presence of Muslims in the kingdom is thus simply marginalized.
But are these historical facts or rather a historiographical construct? How was cultural identity presented through material culture and why is the view of Ethiopian cultural identity still so limited even today? The lecture will seek answers against the backdrop of key political events in 20th century Ethiopia.

We are delighted to announce that in 2026, Brno will host the Design History Society Annual Conference. Titled Design in an Age of Uncertainty, the event will explore the urgent issues that shape not only the present of design history, but also its pasts and possible futures. From the 3rd to the 5th of September, the Department of Art History will host an event dedicated to exchange of ideas about design history, theory, criticism and practice and will bring together the best and up-to-date research in the field from established as well as emerging scholars!
