University of the Third Age

Every year, the Department of Art History offers through the University of the Third Age of the Masaryk University two special three-year courses focused at various topics from art history. In our University of the Third Age programme, we currently teach the following courses:

Art, patrons and artistic style in history

This three-year course is dedicated to the interpretation of selected artworks in the light of the conditions of its creation and the context of its function. The first year will be focused on the cooperation of architecture, sculpture and painting. In the second, the listeners will be introduced to patrons and collectors of artworks. The topic of the third year will be: What is new in current art history.

History of art and visual culture

This three-year course will be focused on various areas of the academic discipline of “Art History”. The listeners will be introduced, among other things, to the current research operation, in which the precise approaches of the “science of art” enrich the traditional discipline and gradually lead to a broader discipline of “History of art and the theory of images”. The course is divided into six semesters: 1st year: History of art and visual culture; 2nd year: Function and significance of artworks; 3rd year: Artworks in the current world.
