Lecture StředověC JinaX: On the Road

Dear colleagues,

We would like to invite you to the opening lecture of the StředověC JinaX series this semester. Prof. Ivan Foletti will tell the story of the church of Ateni Sioni.

The 7th century church is hidden among the mountains near the Georgian town of Gori (the infamous birthplace of Joseph Stalin). It is a building of unique architectural qualities, dotted with reliefs on the facade and decorated with frescoes in the interior, representing one of the most complete and well-preserved cycles in all of Georgia. Yet this unique temple is almost unknown. How did this happen?

'Cognitive Art Histories' Workshop – Programme & Abstracts

We cordially invite you to the 'Cognitive Art Histories' workshop organised by Dr Ancuta Mortu and Dr Jakub Stejskal, which will take place on the 28th of May in Hans Belting Library (Faculty of Arts, MU, Veveří 28, Brno). The workshop brings together scholars interested in studying art histories through the lens of mental processes involved in creating and apprehending artefacts. RENOVATION & REGENERATION

Throughout global history, theory and historiography, the notions of renovation, revival and regeneration have emerged numerous times in different epochs. From Renaissance and the return to the Antiquity, to Enlightenment with its fascination with the Noble Savage, to Modernism’s inclination towards folk and tradition. The strive for regeneration has been related with the nostalgia for the Golden Age triumphs, the past “better times”, or the need to establish (or re-establish) an authority.

We cordially invite you to the April lecture of the series StředověC JinaX. Margarita Khakhanova will tell us whether art history can change the borders of modern states.

As far as this idea sounds far-fetched, there are examples that confirm it. One of them is the impact of how Armenian medieval art was studied in Tsarist Russia.
