-----------------------------------------------------

Conference details: Date: 22nd May 2024 Location: Hans Belting Library Deadline: 31st March 2024 Theme: RENOVATION & REGENERATION Throughout global history, theory and historiography, the notions of renovation, revival and regeneration have emerged numerous times in different epochs. From Renaissance and the return to the Antiquity, to Enlightenment with its fascination with the Noble Savage, to Modernism’s inclination towards folk and tradition. The strive for regeneration has been related with the nostalgia for the Golden Age triumphs, the past “better times”, or the need to establish (or re-establish) an authority. Renovations are associated with moments of transition and change, both politically and religiously, in which art often played a key role in renegotiating the memory of the past. The aim of the present conference is thus to delve into the intricate ways in which arts, objects, and their narration participated in the creation, transformation, and exclusion of memories and meanings. The conference invites papers concerning the ideas of renovation understood broadly in terms of theory, practices, and aesthetic inspiration. We encourage topics related with revival of concepts, reusing of objects, reshaping excising meanings, and reappearing or transforming myth. The scope of subjects can range from classical and broad historiographical phenomena (such as Renaissance) to micro-histories and case studies of singular items, heroes, places and memories. Interested speakers should send an abstract in English (200-250 words) and a short resume (max. 80 words) to Ruben Campini (ruben.campini@gmail.com) before 31st March 2024. The presentations should be 20 minutes. For any questions or doubts please contact Natalia Keller (natalia.keller@gmail.com).

With Best Regards, Natalia Keller, Ruben Campini and Adéla Šenková
