ABSTRACT:
In 1986 and 1987, a two-volume publication Chapters from Czech Art History was published, written by a large team of workers at the Institute of Theory and History of Art of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences under the direction of Rudolf Chadraba, Rostislav Švácha and Anděla Horová. The project was, however, primarily the work of Josef Krása, who prepared and led it from the mid-1970s onwards; he died in 1985. Although the file is marked by editorial imperfection, it was published to help support the very existence of the field of art history in this country. Although it had a strong tradition since the mid-19th century, it was now seriously threatened. How did Chapters respond to this situation, what kind of disciplinary identity did it construct, and how do we read it nearly four decades later?
